One of the first places I visited during my recent trip to Yorkshire was Malham Tarn, which is a glacial lake. Situated at 377 metres (1237 feet) above sea level: it is one of only eight such upland alkaline lakes in Europe.
We visited on a Sunday morning and had the place mostly to ourselves. I loved the clean fresh air and the crispness of the morning (there had been an overnight frost). There is something quite magical about Malham Tarn.
Down by the water's edge is a bird hide. We didn't see many birds (some of our party were a little too noisy for bird watching), but it did give a sense of getting closer to nature and a sheltered spot in which to enjoy a refreshing cuppa and admire the stillness of the water.
