Autumn

Autumn officially arrived this evening and with it, thoughts of harvest, darker evenings and cooler weather, particularly in the early morning.  It has been cold enough to programme the central heating and it came on this morning, but it was only 6 C outside.

We see signs of harvest and recently visited this stand, where they have fresh locally grown apples, which they grow themselves at a nearby orchard.

The early varieties are ready, but I still miss those with which I am most familiar.  We bought Paula Red and Gravenstein, both early apple varieties.  They are both crisp and slightly tart apples.  We plan to visit the orchard around mid-October to pick our own personal favourite apples - Cox's Orange Pippins (mine) and Russetts (Mr Candytuft's favourite) - if we could buy Bramley apples there, it would be perfect...

  1. Lovely harvest photos, Marie. I love this time of year, as long as it's not too cold or wet, but I must admit that I really don't like apples! I can cope if they are cooked but definitely not raw. I know, I'm weird. x

    1. I love the colours of the apples as well as that little hut. I only enjoy certain varieties of apples - so many of them are quite tasteless, but these fresh orchard apples are delicious. Marie x

    1. The colours are lovely - we are seeing the first hints of the leaves changing, though not as much as in New Brunswick, where we saw much more change in the leaves. Marie x

  4. How wonderful this time of year is. I love all the colours in the fruits and berries. I like a tart, crisp apple. We have loads of apple pieces frozen ready to make jam with plums and berries. Our friends have Bramley apple trees in their garden and brought us loads as they couldn't cope with them all:)
